Playing Solo

Monte Cristo were very upbeat about the online elements of their game Cities XL when they first released it. However, the French publisher has now announced that they will be ending the online service, because fewer than expected subscribers joined the servers.

The servers will shut down on the 8th of March, 2010, meaning that the game will revert to a single player experience from then on. A future edition of the game, Cities XL 2011 (which has not had a release date set yet) will also be single player only.

"We do realise that some of you were real fans of the Planet Offer, and loved to be able to visit other player's cities and trade tokens between each other," Monte Cristo said in a statement. "There are simply not enough of us."

The market leader?

Nintendo have released figures detailing the current life sales of the Wii and DS gaming consoles. These figures constitute the sales figures of the devices since they were first released.

The figures indicate that the Wii has sold 67.4 million units worldwide since it’s initial release, with 32 million of those having been sold in the US, 9.7 million in Japan, and 25.7 million in the rest of the world. In addition to this, 509.6 million units of Wii software have been sold in that time.

The DS, which has been on the market for longer, has sold 125.1 million units to date, having reached the 100 million mark in March 2009. 688.3 million units of DS software have also been sold.
